Clash of Clans Town Hall 7 Clan War Attack Strategy

In Clash of Clans, Clan War battles are a great source of both resources as well as gems (via the achievements – War Hero III is worth 1,000 gems!). At Town Hall 7, players have access to some great unit combinations that can allow them to easily 100% clear any Town Hall 7 player as well as many low to mid-range Town Hall 8 players.

In order for your clan to win (and get the big resource reward) as well as in order to unlock the Clan War achievements, you need to get a 3 star clear on both attacks if possible. As a result, in this guide to CoC Clan War attack strategies, I will be covering the best strategies for players to use at this level range in order to get easy 3 star clears.

The best (and perhaps most overlooked) aspect of Clan Wars is that players can participate in Clan Wars while they have a shield. This is a great way to get additional Dark Elixir at Town Hall 7 without exposing yourself to another attack.

CoC TH7 Clan War Attack Strategy Video Guide

The video below demonstrates the strategies recommended in this guide in action. It is worth watching to get a better idea of how to place units and evaluate target bases.

TH7 Clan War Army Composition

The best army composition at Town Hall 7 for War Battles is to use 10 Dragons. If you want to take on mid-range TH8 players, it is useful to have a Dragon in the Clan Castle and to upgrade your Dragons to level 2. Note: Technically a 25+ Hog Rider army will outperform 10 Dragons, but that is an enormous waste of Dark Elixir. It is much easier to get excess Elixir to pump into Dragons as opposed to getting the 900+ DE required to build a 25+ Hog Rider army.

Since Dragons require a level 9 Barracks, it is in your best interest to level up all of your Barracks to level 9 shortly after hitting Town Hall 7. Just upgrade each Barracks one at a time until all are level 9 so that you do not suffer from low production at any point.

The spells and strategies you use depends on whether or not you are attacking a Town Hall 7 player. Town Hall 7 players are much easier to take down with a 10 Dragon army, as players get a third Air Defense upon hitting TH8. Town Hall 8 players can still be 3-star cleared, but not every TH8 player can be cleared. Evaluating bases, good unit placement, upgrading Dragons, and spell choices will determine your ability to 100% clear TH8 players reliably.

Against Town Hall 7 Players

Taking down TH7 players with 10 Dragons is very easy. Players may or may not need spells; you will only need spells if you have level 1 Dragons and the enemy player has maxed out Air Defense towers. If the enemy player has maxed out their Air Defense towers, all you have to do is build 3x LIghtning Spells. Use the three LIghtning Spells on one of the Air Defense towers, destroying it (Lightning Spells do need to be level 3 or higher for this purpose).

With only one Air Defense left, you can place your 10 Dragons practically anywhere on the map and get an easy 100% clear. Place them in the same area of the map, but spread them out a little bit in order to reduce the effects of splash damage.

Against Town Hall 8 Players

Town Hall 8 players can be cleared with 3 Stars by TH7 players using Dragons, but certain conditions need to be met for this to be reliable. FIrst off, it helps significantly if the TH7 player has level 2 Dragons. A Dragon in the Clan Castle is very useful as well, but not necessary. The preferred combination of spells is two Rage Spells and one Healing Spell.

In addition to leveling up Dragons, it helps significantly if the TH8 player does not have maxed out Air Defense towers or has poorly positioned Air Defense towers. Level-wise, if the average level of Air Defense tower is less than 4 (Air Defense towers turn black at level 4, so level 4+ are easy to spot), that is a good sign. If all 3 towers are level 4 or higher, that is a bad sign.

If the towers are either on the edge of the base or clustered together, level of the enemy tower may be irrelevant. Clustered towers are susceptible to a Rage Spell + Healing Spell combination, where a few Dragons can rip down multiple towers while being healed. The video guide embedded earlier in this article demonstrates this in action on one such base with clustered AIr Defense towers.

Placement of Dragons is very important when attacking TH8 players (as opposed to TH7 where it is practically impossible to mess up). First, choose the side of the base you want to attack. it is best to start your attack within range of the most Air Defense towers or near the highest-level tower. Initially, drop two Dragons, about two structures apart on the perimeter of the base where you want to attack. These Dragons likely will not actually participate in the main attack, and instead will travel along the perimeter of the base, picking off external structures. This is intended, as you do not want the bulk of the Dragons to travel along the outside of the base but instead head towards the center. The Barbarian King can aid in this function as well.

As soon as the two initial Dragons take out a few perimeter buildings, drop your remaining 8 Dragons. They should now head towards the center of the base with all the perimeter structures destroyed. Drop a Rage Spell somewhat deep into the center of the enemy’s base; this will speed up the Dragon’s clearing into the enemy’s base and should result in the destruction of at least one Air Defense tower. As the Dragons core towards the Town Hall or a cluster of high health buildings (storages), drop your second Rage Spell. Drop the Healing Spell as needed on low-health Dragons – this will vary on a battle-by-battle basis. Check the video guide for more details on healing spell placement.

With enough practice, you will find the 10 Dragon army can reliably 100% clear many TH8 bases. Many enemy players neglect leveling up their Air Defense towers while having high level walls and other towers. These bases are great for Dragon-based attacks; you will get a large resource reward and your clan will be happy you cleared a tough opponent with 3 stars.

Hi, are you using an emulator? Wondering how you are placing troops by mouse click? I’ve heard emulators are unsafe, are there good ones out there to use? Thanks!

The videos are using bluestacks. I don’t know how safe or unsafe it is, but I’ve been using it for 4+ months with no issue. Not familiar with an iOS emulator, although there are some out there. I will play the same accounts on both my phone and on the emulator and haven’t had an issue.

Sure. If you find something that works good let me know, as I’m likely going to get an iPhone when the next gen is released.

It doesn’t matter if you are an iphone user or not. You can still connect your clash account to the bluestacks coc app.

Your guides are great, I refer to them all the time. Any chance we can get a TH6 clan war attack guide?

Thanks! I’ll think about putting one up, but I won’t have a video guide (unless I level another account). I don’t have any accounts left under TH8.

No video guide would be just fine. TH6 is actually a pretty tough spot to be so any help is most welcome. Won’t be took much longer until I make the TH7 jump though thank goodness.

Hi! So what about a maxed out TH8? I’m at TH7 and want to 3star a maxed out TH8. Any chance a hog rider – dragon combo will work? what spells would you recommend for the hog riders?

    Reply
    1. admin Post author

Hog Riders can work, but it’s not a sure shot if you mess up unit placement. It will take some time to get used to using properly. You should use 3x Healing Spell – this keeps the Hog Riders up as they go through the base. Use the spells once few Hog Riders get down to orange health. As you start using Hog Riders, you will be able to predict their pathing better and drop the healing spell so it covers more territory.

I am at town hall 8 and looking at level 5 balloons. How would they rate in a war against maxxed town hall 8? It looks like a very impressive upgrade but I seldom use balloons at present.
Really enjoy your posts and videos by the way. Thanks

They aren’t quite strong enough yet. I leveled up balloons to 5 and Minions to 3, thinking I’d use Balloonion at TH8 in wars and save money over Dragons and its just not as strong. They’re good for 2 stars, but not great at three starring a maxed TH8. I don’t think I managed to 3 star any TH8 with maxed wizard towers and level 5+ air defense towers. The upgrade from level 4 to 5 is big, but the upgrade from 5 to 6 is even bigger. Really need the level 6 balloons before they become a great unit.

Your techniques are amazing! However can you expand a little. Starting at TH7 there’s too much troops and spells to upgrade for the entire time span of all the other things. I suggest making a few guides on the priority of upgrades for both building and troop/spells. Thanks!

What order do you recommend upgrades when you TH7? Lab and spell factory seem obvious, then camps but I’d love to read your thoughts on it.

Actually I didn’t upgrade spell factory as top priority. I went Lab + Dark Elixir storage, so I could start looting dark elixir. My other 2 builders went towards defensive structures / walls, only because I didn’t have enough elixir for lab + de storgae + spell factory. I think I finally had enough elixir for spell factory after the lab finished. After that, I used elixir on lab upgrades (priority 1), army camps (priority 2), then barracks. Gold went towards defensive structures.

Generally I’ll have 2 builders on elixir-based upgrades, and 2 builders on gold-based upgrades, just because you need to spend your gold and you do not have unlimited elixir. Eventually that drops to 3 builders on gold upgrades and 1 on elixir upgrades, just because there are more gold upgrades than elixir upgrades.

Builder 1: Lab –> Spell Factory –> Max out Army Camps –> Tower upgrades
Builder 2: New Army Camp –> Army Camp Level 2 (and so on until max) –> Max Out Barracks
Builder 3: Dark Elixir Storage –> new towers / tower upgrades
Builder 4: Walls (just placing down all level 1 walls so you can update your defense) –> Air Defense Tower –> Other Tower Upgrades

When attacking a TH8 base can you also just use 3x Lightning Spells as a substitute for the Rage+Healing Spell Combo?

    Reply
    1. admin Post author

You could, but I don’t find it as effective as TH7. There are still 2 air defense towers left. Rage spells work better.

    Hey Osiris,

I’ve been following your guide since my TH4 days.
Im already at TH7 thanks a lot.

    Quick question
For clan war attack army composition for taking out TH7 bases, would there be any effective alternative way rather than mass dragon attack? Since i don’t have dragons yet.

Thanks for the comment and compliment. Without Dragons, I’d probably just try to use Barb / Archer / Wall Breaker / Spells. Giant/Healer is a little more effective, especially if one of the air defense buildings are exposed (can use 3x lightning spell to take down one air defense, let the giants take down the exposed one then drop healers).

Hey Osiris, great guide. Deep and clear.
Anyway, what do you think about if enemy’s clan castle troops are consist of three or four high leveled wizards + anything else??
Deploying mass dragons will be screwed, And I hope there will be another video against those kind of enemy’s clan castle troops.

    Thanks

Don’t stack the Dragons and drop a rage spell and you will do fine. Just space them out by even just 1 tile and they will not get hit with splash. You might lose 1 Dragon, but shouldn’t lose more. If multiple Dragons get hit by the Wizards you can drop the Healing spell to help recover. Wiz only ruin a dragon attack if you drop all Dragons on the exact same pixel on the map.

That sounds like a decent war composition. I’d probably scrap the Barbarians though, adding a third healer or more Archers (to help with handling enemy CC units / hero).

Drop a Hog Rider to lure out CC units, kill CC units with a lightning spell or Archers, then drop about 2/3 of your Hog Riders at a place where there is no space for a big bomb. Drop a healing spell when your hog riders get low, trying to predict their pathing to maximize uptime. Drop the second healing spell when your hog riders get low again. If your pack gets taken out by a big bomb, drop the remaining 1/3 of your Hog Riders to finish off the base.

I used your guides all the way through TH7 and I have gotten 6 stars in every war so thanks for that! I am 6 days from hitting th8 now and I figure that I can still use dragons against weak TH8s (I do not like dropping down in clan wars so I do not want to hit TH7s) or medium TH8s with bad tower placement.

But my question is: what about mid TH8s with good tower or strong TH8s? What is the best thing to get 3 stars against them? Hog riders? If using hog riders, should I use all heal spells? What level hog riders do I need to have before I can confidently take on strong/maxed out TH8s? If I use 30 hog riders, should all of the rest of my units be archers? Sorry for so many questions, but you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable guys around!

I honestly would not recommend using hogs. You need SO MUCH dark elixir at TH8 to cap.. and if you are hogging every clan war, you are shooting yourself in the foot. You should use 3x healing spells. Make sure to drop 1-2 hogs to lure CC units before committing. Don’t drop all your hogs in one spot (about 2/3 seems to work well) as you don’t want to lose too many should the enemy have a big bomb hog trap somewhere in the base (like in my layout). Hog Riders can work at level 1 if they are placed intelligently, but of course each level helps. You will likely be better off with 35 hogs against a tougher TH8 than just 30. The th8 guide i posted has never been wiped by 30 hogs, but has been by 35 hogs (before big bomb buff) when it was still a mid th8. After fully upgrading all towers it was never wiped by a TH8, even one using hogs. It could still be done, just didn’t happen to run into a skilled enough player to make it happen.

Hogs definitely work better at TH9, when you have 4x healing spells to support them.

Your guide is very helpful, just starting using dragons. I think because i’m a little nervous to use only dragons, I use 8 or 9 dragons, then fill in with archers and barbarians, with 3 rage spells. Haven’t been able to decide if I like 2 rage & 1 healing–I think after my attack, I will try all dragons, with your guide in mind. Hey thanks bunches!

3 Rage Spells probably works just as well or maybe a little better, but the length of time it takes to train 3x Rage Spells annoys me. The Dragons are done in 90 minutes and 3x rage spells takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.

First of all, thanks for your great guides!
I have used your 10-dragon composition (just with my level 1 dragons) a few times and it works perfectly for TH7 and some TH8 enemies. The only problem I see is that it is an elixir-expensive army composition (~250k in dragons + 60k in 3 x lightning spells) with respect to the usual bonus given by winning those battles (~170k of gold, ~170k of elixir). Normally, I make one of my two attacks this way and the other using a combination of barbarians/archers/giants/wall breakers/healers that costs ~100k elixir. Obviously, this second attack sometimes fails.
What do you think about this?
    Cheers,
    Pablo

Yeah that’s fine. If you really want to save on your second attack, you should be able to do just Barb/Archer/Wall Breaker with 3x spells.

Without Dragons, forget it. Giants + Wizards + A Healer + Wall Breakers + Healing/Rage spells will work on a weaker TH7, but probably not 3 star a maxed TH7.
