Best Clash of Clans Town Hall 7 Base Layout: Farming, War, and Trophy Defense Setups

Town Hall 7 is the first level in Clash of Clans where players actually have enough walls, traps, and towers piece together a very effective defensive layout. With the right base set up, TH7 players can create a farming, war, or trophy setup that will make other players think twice before attacking.

While you can still get cleared by enemy players using more expensive units (like a full Dragon army), players using the layout recommended in this guide will find that the majority of attackers will end up sniping a Town Hall or taking out just 1 storage building, leaving the bulk of your loot untouched.

TH7 Base Setup: Video Guide

The video guide below demonstrates the recommended base layout in action. While most of the video is focused on farming, the base can be easily converted into a highly effective war or trophy base by placing the Town Hall in the center of the base.

Best Clash of Clans Town Hall 7 Farming Base… by osirisguide

This build is known as “The Mantis” and is not my original creation. I picked it up off the Supercell forums and it was originally posted by forum user Heizenbrg. I was looking for a base that would easily swap with a Town Hall for Clan Wars (pre-update that allowed for a separate war base). I was impressed with how well the base performed, and adopted this wall layout as my permanent base, moving the buildings around to adapt to different circumstances.

CoC Town Hall 7 Base Layout & Strategy Discussion

town hall 7 farming base

With the big increase in number of walls and towers available at Town Hall 7, this base has a lot going on as compared to early Town Hall defenses. Below, I will break down why certain buildings are placed the way they are and how the base plays out.

One new feature of this base not used at earlier Town Hall levels is the presence of three openings in the wall that serve to funnel Giants over Spring Traps or Big Bombs. When towers are close to one another with no walls between them, it is natural for Giants to move from one tower to the next. With only a single gap of space for the Giants to travel over and a Spring Trap placed carefully in this space, Giants get flipped.

Most (but not all) players are wise to funnels at this point. A well-placed funnel is often enough to discourage an attack altogether, so do not consider it a loss if players know they should avoid funnels.

What the funnels really do is limit the areas that players can attack from when approaching this base. Nearly every attack on this base comes from one of three spots. Ground attacks almost exclusively come from either the southwest or northwest edges of the base. Air attacks come almost exclusively from either the northwest edge or southern point of the base. Since there is an extra storage unit on the west side of the base, most attacks come from the western side.

Ground attacks from the southwest are the most common. Players use Wall Breakers to break through the southwestern wall in order to get access to the cell with the Cannon and Archer Tower. Two more sets of Wall Breakers are dropped, giving players access to the center cell of the base that contains the Air Defense towers as well as two of the three Mortars.  The Town Hall is specifically placed at the southwestern portion of the base; not only does it provide a buffer against ground attacks, but it ensures players get a shield with each enemy attack.

I typically do not like to place both Air Defenses and two Mortars so close to one another. There are too many valuable structures in the center cell. However, this is a necessary evil at TH7, as piling a lot of structures in the center of the base gives you a large enough base to fit the Clan Castle perfectly in the center of the base without allowing its units to be easily lured out.

The best thing about the specific layout of the base pictured above is that it is designed to protect the Dark Elixir storage. Both Wizard Towers are within range of the Dark Elixir storage, as are all three Mortars. Goblins cannot tank the towers with a Healing Spell while burning down the Dark Elixir storage. Instead, the enemy player needs to clear most of the base before getting access to the Dark Elixir storage. Dark Elixir is by far the most valuable resource at Town Hall 7 as players are all struggling to get enough Dark Elixir to unlock and then upgrade their Barbarian King.

Wars and Trophies

For Wars and Trophies, simply swap out one of the structures within the center of the base and replace it with the Town Hall. You will have to move some of the buildings around so that the Town Hall is in the center of the base (as a 4×4 building, it must be placed directly in the center of the chamber to fit). For Clan Wars, you can just put a storage building on the outside of the base. If you want to farm trophies but protect your resources, you may need to rearrange a bit more to make the base work.

      Hi Jaxo7060,

I will be putting up TH8 farming and base design within 1 week. TH9 likely won’t be up for another month or two.

      Thanks

I used this base while farming up my base at Town Hall 7 and it was awesome. I am 8 hours from TH8 and can’t wait to see your next setup.

    Thank you

    Good work admin!

I’ve been following your site and methods since th5 (now th7) and it has morphed my play into beast mode. I was the guy always asking others for help now I’m the guy they come to for help! You have solid guides that are very clear to understand. I’m just wondering if th8 is going to pop up soon? Seems to be overdue! Anyways, keep up the great work!

Have learned a lot from your articles. I am using your 7 base layout and updating everything before going to level 8 …. So far so good and I’m not even close to getting all my current upgrades done.
Thanks for all the advice and look forward to level 8 advice! 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to put together these strategy guides, Osiris. You are my go to guru. I am almost ready to upgrade to town hall 8, and have been using your tips since town hall 6. I’m now coaching other players in my clan, even ones who have been playing much longer than I have and even some who are higher levels than me. You have really helped me learn to play the game! I look forward to learning even more in future guides.

I’ve heard around the forums, wiki, and in several clans that giant bombs and seeking air mines are not worth building because of the extraordinary cost. 20000 gold to rearm each is not a reasonable price to pay if it only takes out a couple goblins. Plus it ruins the whole rearm all feature if you’ve built it and don’t have the capacity to rearm all the giant bombs and SAM. Overall I don’t think it’s wise to use until you’re high TH8 or above.

You don’t have to arm them if you don’t want. I would disagree seeking air mines are not worth building – they are a great help vs. healers and dragons at this range. Big Bombs agree they are very expensive to arm. In this layout, they rarely go off. Same for my recommended TH8 layout. They typically only proc when someone uses Hog Riders for the TH8 layout, and in the TH7 layout, if someone is getting close to your DE elixir. Any amount of gold at this level is worth trading for your DE’s protection.

I’m not sure. Probably have an extra wall somewhere. Look at the spacing between buildings and make sure it is exact.

Hey, i have been using your bases since town hall 4 and they have been working very well. The only thing i need to know is how did you manage to get the fourth builder on town hall 7. Just by clearing trees nd bushes??????

First two war achievements help a lot. So does the 1250 trophy achievement (assuming you already got that). trees and bushes help as well, especially gem boxes.

The “problem” with good defense is that your trophies will increase. 🙂 With my own TH5 design I made it to 1179 trophies without attacking anyone, it was simply deflecting bad attacks on my base. At that point though, higher lvl players noticed me and started destroying my base every 16 hours with healers, hogs and dragons. I had to deliberately drop my trophies to get the 1 mill. elixir for the lightning spell upgrade and to make it to TH6.
Now I’ve maxed out TH6 defenses, your base design, and just started the TH7 upgrade. So, my question, do you have any advice on how to approach the TH7 base? Do I keep the TH6 design and upgrade walls/canons/towers, or should I adopt the TH7 design immediately, even though some walls and items will be lvl1?
It is uncertain how much resources I will have available when the build is completed, but I pretty much have 0 gold and elixir right now, that’s why I wonder how to approach this. I guess I’ll have to accept that my base will be destroyed for a while, until I can get my defenses up.

Anyway, thanks for an excellent resource, I wish I had found it sooner. 🙂

I would just keep the TH6 defense until you have all the walls and structures needed. It should only take a day or 2 to get everything down. Even if everything is just level 1-4, you should be fine to set up the TH7 base.

    Hi admin,
Can you give me a base layout where all of my gold and elixir are stored equally? Beacause the other gokd storageis at the perimeter of the base tnx.

Swap one of the elixir storage units for one of the gold. You do not have to keep them in these places, you can swap between the two easily.

      Builder 1 = Lab
Builder 2 = Army Camp (always be upgrading this new Army Camp)
Builder 3 = New Barracks + a few levels so its usable
      Builder 4 = DE Storage

Then start working on getting up walls (level 5-6) and new towers so that you can set up a proper TH7 defense.

I will get one eventually, I don’t have a TH7 though, so I’d have to start a new account unless it was just a video of me talking.

          2. admin Post author

Might be harder to find though for people searching the site’s sidebar or Google for (insert town hall) + upgrade priority. Try to keep things neatly segmented to help with discoverability.

What do you recommend putting in the Barbarian King Altar and Hidden Tesla spots, before they are attained? I’m thinking those will likely take some time and this base layout would be used before that.

So just started in Th 7 everything upgraded going in getting towers. For def and following lab, base , army camps etc do you max out upgrades on all towers new and old before hidden teslas.? And do you bring up all the new towers before upgrading to max levels? Also I am prioritizing upgrades to barbs archers then dragons before barb king.

Any tweets to the above. Keep up the great work lots of fun!

I started upgrading Hidden Teslas with 1 builder as I got about started hitting max level with some of myh towers defense; the reason being Hidden Teslas take a long time to upgrade.

I don’t understand how barbs/archers/dragons comes before Barb King. Barb King uses Dark Elixir; the other units cost regular elixir. Upgrade both as you get the resources.

I’m wondering if without the Telsa’s (or some other closer defensive building), will giants not follow the funnel after taking out the cannon and instead go after the adjacent Archer Tower behind the wall?

          2. admin Post author

Yeah they can, that is why the Teslas go there. You will have to take ~a week of being vulnerable to set up the base, just the growing pains of going up a TH.

          3. Mark

A person I know with Tesla’s gave this base layout a try and one giant followed the funnel, while the majority went back for the Archer Tower. Is that expected?

          4. admin Post author

Happens rarely but not often. It’s also not the worst deal in the world when Giants hit that Archer Tower, as its not a particular soft cell right there. Most players will use WBs to try and break into it anyway.

    1. admin Post author

Dead last priority. You’ll never use Dark Barracks units at TH7 or TH8. You don’t really use them til TH9 since Dark Elixir is so tight before that.

    Thanks for the great designs!

What would your recommend for someone that isn’t in a clan?

I was thinking of swapping the western gold storage with the clan castle, but the center cell might become too juicy. What do you think?

I’d recommend getting in a Clan. If you don’t want to do Clan Wars or deal with clanmates, there are plenty of clans that only really exist for donation purposes. Join one, as you really need CC units to mount an effective defense at TH7+.

Thanks admin! So , I’m just wondering about the Q of the upgrades. Does it mean that we should focus everything on farming setup first then when we have the sufficient amount of farm, then only we take out bbr king, dark baracks, etc. ? DE storage should be also taken out firstly ?

    Reply
    1. admin Post author

Well barbarian king is expensive, you won’t be able to afford that any time soon into TH7. DE Storage is required to even work towards barbarian king. The dark barracks is not an important structure at TH7 since you won’t have much dark elixir to spare anyway.

Thanks for sharing and explaining this town hall design, as I have recently adopted it and it works great. However, if your clan rarely donates drags, or only donates drags for war, what is the seccond best troop to have inside the clan castle?

Thanks, this is the best TH design website I’ve seen.

I’m not sure. Maybe you are too high in trophy count, your towers are underleveled, or are doing something wrong. The only time I found this base getting 100% cleared was against mass dragons, hog riders, or high TH8s/low TH9s going wild with spells and expensive units.

    2. Mike

Yeah, I lowered my trophy count because my archer towers were not high enough, so now people only get 1 star if any. Sometimes lowering your trophy count is necessary. And it’s good for farming as well as players rarely get your resources

      Hi Turkinator

I am actually not the leader of the clan and cannot edit trophy count. This clan is actually very casual so not much excitement here. It was just the first one I joined as a newbie and have never bothered to look for another one. I may actually seek a more serious clan once I reach level 115ish.

I prefer enemies to try and attack the base from the top rather than from the bottom, so I like having a funnel available at the top there.
